The problem with large dollar amount purchases is, they happen so infrequently that it is hard to become an expert on buying these items. Compared to real estate used cars have two distinct advantages, they are portable and there are many sources for finding their value.

This is where eBay comes in. If all goes well you will be able to pick up that $21,000 car for say $22,000, saving yourself $8,000.

Most used cars are not new cars slightly used, but rather are cars that the original owner has decided to forgo to drive a newer car. This owner, if he trades his car in to the dealer may not get as much as he feels the car is worth. Dealers what to make money when they sell the cars they take in trade in so they try to buy them at the lowest possible price. These cars end up on eBay because the owners don’t want to feel ripped off when they trade their cars in.

The best place to start your used car search may be the shopping mall. There with thousands of different cars parked in one place, you can get a pretty good idea of what kind of car you want to buy. The reason why I don’t recommend starting at a used car dealer is that they might try to lean you towards a particular car. You may not buy the used car dealers shiny red 89 Porsche for $17,999, but you might end up buying one a week later for $11,000, proud of your incredible deal until you realize you just bought a sixteen year old car that will have you having to declare your mechanic and his four kids as dependents on your next three tax returns.

To find the expected cost of any used car go to Kelly’s blue book at www.kbb.com. At this site you will find almost all the cars sold in reasonable numbers for the past 25 years. Although it doesn’t guarantee you will find the car for sale at the blue book price it does give you an excellent idea of how much the car you are buying is worth.
