Honda won’t modify the NSX to meet 2006 emission standards
2005 is to be the last model year for the Acura NSX, the first car that was able to marry Italian exoticness with Honda Accord reliability while still being a favorite amongst auto guys. This decision did not come as a surprise to many. Acura had been working on a new sports vehicle and the overall popularity of the two passenger sports car segment has been declining since SUV’s became popular in 1991. Toyota stopped building the supra in 1998 and has yet to replace the model. When the NSX was introduced sports cars were a legitimate trade up vehicle for people driving sedans. Besides the high cost of getting the NSX to pass the 2006 federal emission standards, many executives at Honda felt the NSX no longer added to the overall cache of the brand. Within the last five years several Japanese cars have been introduced that have more power and speed. In 1991 286 horsepower was a lot for an engine without a turbocharger. Today that number is strictly pedestrian. Honda never made money on the NSX, the automobile was built to make all Acura’s seem sportier and more refined. Acura dealers are not discounting the price for this car like they have in the past. You can expect to pay close to actual list now that this car has reached the end of its model run. Considering that fewer than 20,000 of these cars have ever been built the list price of $89,000 for an oversized go-cart may be a bargain.
In October of 2003 Honda unveiled the Honda HSC which was quickly considered by many to be the next Acura NSX. The project was not overly ambitious as the same 3.2 liter V6 power plant was planned to be used. The early rumors were that the 2005 NSX would be based on this design. This did not happen. Like the Nissan Mid4 automobile that was never built The HSC is currently on the shelf. We know both Lexus and Nissan are currently designing true super cars for future production. The Lexus LF-A vehicle should have 500 horsepower while the Nissan Skyline GT-R will get about 450 horsepower. Those two cars are due out in the 2007 and 2008 model years. When the Acura NSX was introduced at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show Toyota and Nissan had nothing like it. Acura will need to get busy if they want to regain the title for most exotic Japanese sports car. When the next Acura NSX is announced maybe Honda racing will step up to the plate with its first V8 engine automobile.
